The Institutional Review Board’s application process can be frustrating for professors, and for student researchers it can be disheartening, if not disabling. Throughout the past decade researchers have been faced with increased oversight and, at times, changing rules. The increased scrutiny did not spontaneously appear to create frustration and bureaucracy in the research community, but developed over time to address and prevent violations of ethical standards. The research evaluation process is evolving, but proper oversight requires researchers develop relationships with their review boards.
