How to keep Research Data Protected and Secure
New security provisions are called for in the Privacy Rule and will become the standard in 2004. We recommend implementing the following practices now:
- Backing up all data and storing backups in a location separate from the original.
- Securing all computers (workstations and servers) and storage devices with locks.
- Protecting all computers and electronic media with "sign-on"passwords.
See the University's Tips for Passwords.
- Using encryption software to encode patient data. (see Data Security Products to the right)
- For Microsoft Windows users, install the latest updates at www.windowsupdate.com. These updates include fixes to previously unknown
software bugs and improve the stability of your software.
