What is intellectual property?

"Intellectual property" has traditionally been divided into patents, trademarks, and copyright.

The University of Minnesota has a number of policies that address these issues. All of them contain a set of guiding principles that emphasize, support, and protect the creation, sharing, and diffusion of knowledge as key components of the intellectual life of the University community.
